The Bar or Barreau is the professional association that governs the practice of law in Haiti in accordance with the Decree of March 29, 1979. The practice of law is strictly reserved to Haitian citizens. Lawyers must accredit a Bachelor’s degree in Law from a Haitian university.  As one of the graduation requirements, students must successfully author and defend an original research thesis or memoire.  Additionally, prospective lawyers must complete a two-year internship or stage with a licensed attorney before they are eligible for a certificate of professional aptitude from The Bar.

In general, law students receive very little formal training and support in researching and writing their theses.  A severe shortage of resources has serious implications for law students, as many face difficulties in accessing research for their thesis.  Hastings to Haiti has sought to aid Haitian students in the thesis-writing process by partnering with individual law students to provide access to research materials in French. Hastings to Haiti also developed a research tutorial in French to provide Haitian law students with the tools they need to access free online resources. To learn about becoming a mentor to students working on their memoires, please email us at HastingsToHaiti@gmail.com.
